Just a few things we are obsessing over this summer...

June 13, 2018

If you're decorating this season and are starved for inspiration, we have some scrumptious home candy for you. A few iconic pieces can really lift a space and instill character, charm and originality into mundane catalogue homes.

We wish we could decorate every day - a new villa , a penthouse or a super yacht in a different corner of the world - but for now, we will share our pipe dreams and just play house vicariously through our dear readers.

Don’t pay much thought to our seasonal reference though. Our summer edit is just as classic as Frank Sinatra in a Panama hat!

GABRIEL SCOTT LIGHTING

Located in the 19th century building, Brewster Carriage House, in Nolita, Gabriel Scott’s flagship store is nothing short of extraordinary. The Canadian design duo, Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler bring their multidisciplinary background in architecture, industrial design and jewelry making into their brand that brews something to the likes of what we call design magic.

The sleek metal structures are juxtaposed with beautifully finished hand blown glass with a subtle, almost unworldly luminescence that really excites us.

The Harlow series, available in a range of metallic finishes and the prettiest hues of blown glass have got to be Bivain’s favourite. They also carry some delectable pieces of seating and furniture and can be custom ordered.

NANIMARQUINA RUGS

We found Nani Marquina’s rug company with a stroke of luck when we were obsessing over our all time favourite design darling, Jamie Hayon. This little chance stumbling turned out to be quite serendipitous because we have found ourselves to be absolutely charmed! Her Barcelona based studio collaborates with international designers to create rugs with an element of surprise and effortless, everlasting modernity.

Nanimarquina has a wide range of rugs that make a statement yet elegantly mould into your decor. What we love though, is that you get exceptional craftsmanship and design for very accessible pricing.

Available through online and retail platforms throughout the world, Nanimarquina is within reach without becoming factory production. Besides the obvious favourite Hayon x Nani collection, we love Chillida’s Figura Humana. Case in point - Bivain’s Nude collection. What’s not to love about every curve in a woman’s body?

MAISON SARAH LAVOINE

One word. Incroyable! We had the good fortune of experiencing Sarah Lavoine’s great taste when we stayed at the Le Roch Hotel & Spa in Paris - a boutique design hotel, tucked away quietly on Rue Saint Roch, with a delectable, sun-dripping dining room and reception.

Be sure to check out the secret Hammam room if you make it there. Lavoine's style is eponymous with Parisian chic. Her products are richly hued, luxurious and effortlessly stylish, down to the smallest bowl.

We are absolutely infatuated with her use of colour blocking and signature colour palettes of teal, blush, graphites and greys. Bivain’s favourites are the “Leo” ottomans in colour blocked velvets that uplift our spirits instantly.

BDDW FURNITURE

Tyler Hays founded BDDW as an artisanal, American furniture company with outlets in both Milan and New York. Tyler brings his multidisciplinary background to create perfectly thought out masterpieces that frankly has us drooling like addicts. He uses traditional craftsmanship and joinery with restraint and beauty to create contemporary showstoppers that are seamless, timeless and unique. We really believe that BDDW pieces would be heirlooms to pass on for their enduring quality and design.

The Deck series, featuring the Deck chair and swing, is on our “most wanted” list since it seems absolutely criminal to not possess them. The masculine yet elegant design is most inspiring with a discerning use of bronze, mulled leather, holly wood, oak and shearling.
